Adam Smith Foundation Urges Missourians to Support Eminent Domain Reform

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Jefferson City) - In response to last week's Supreme Court ruling against property rights, Adam Smith Foundation leaders today urged Missourians to get involved to ensure eminent domain reform is on the 2008 ballot.

Last week, in the case of *City of Arnold v. Tourkakis*, the Supreme Court of Missouri ruled that a non-chartered city may use eminent domain to condemn private property in a redevelopment area. The decision elicited public reactions from a number of property rights advocates, including Ron Calzone, who was quoted by the AP as saying "this is a scary, scary decision."

Adam Smith Foundation President John Elliott expressed his disappointment with the decision and urged Missourians to support Calzone and Missouri Citizens for Property Rights as they work to put eminent domain reform on the 2008 ballot. "With eminent domain abuse, as with so many other policy areas affected by courts, we are learning that the ultimate solution will be found by going directly to the people," said Elliott. "I encourage every Missourian to visit the website of Missouri Citizens for Property Rights, at www.mo-cpr.org, and learn how to get involved in the effort to protect individual property rights from the dangerous agenda of out of control developers and local governments."
