Adam Smith Foundation Uses Tax Freedom Day to Encourage Missourians to Demand Tax Reform
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Contact: (573) 636-6060(Jefferson City) On National Tax Freedom Day - the day Americans have earned enough income to pay off their total tax bill for the year - the Adam Smith Foundation encouraged Missourians to demand tax cuts from local, state and federal officials. National Tax Freedom Day falls on April 23 this year, which is too late, according to Adam Smith leaders. Missouri's Tax Freedom Day came last week, on April 14, ranking Missouri 36th nationally. According to Adam Smith Foundation president John Elliott, "It says something about our nation's fiscal leadership when Americans work longer each year to pay their taxes than they do to pay for health care and housing combined. We need more leaders who understand the financial challenges our families face and fewer leaders who are willing to use tax revenue to support wasteful habits designed to ensure someone's re-election. The rising cost of health care and gasoline are just two reasons we need leaders who are committed to lowering taxes so hard working Missourians can see an improvement in their quality of life."
Elliott pointed to $3,000,000 appropriated for the "First Tee" program, designed to get kids involved in golf, and $98,000 allocated to develop a "walking tour" of a small town in Virginia, as examples of waste at the federal level. Rather than continue to allow federal and state legislators send tax dollars to these wasteful programs, argued Elliott, Missourians should demand real tax reform, including the abolition of the Alternative Minimum Tax and a revamping of the tax code.
Stand up against out-of-control spending!
The Adam Smith Foundation urges you to call your legislators to tell them you will not stand for any more frivolous wastes of money.
