Adam Smith Foundation Urges Supreme Court to Reject Appeal in School Funding Case
(Jefferson City) - The Adam Smith Foundation urged the Missouri Supreme Court today to reject any appeal by school districts who want the Supreme Court to strike down Missouri's system for funding public schools.
The Adam Smith Foundation's statement comes on the heels of an announcement by more than 200 school districts that they would appeal the decision last month by a lower court to uphold the school funding system. The Adam Smith Foundation is vocally opposed to judicially imposed tax increases and has argued that school districts should be investing tax dollars in their schools rather than in frivolous lawsuits.
Adam Smith Foundation President John Elliott said any attempt to appeal to the Supreme Court was "without merit" and "a waste of taxpayer dollars. Missourians don't want their tax dollars lining the pockets of opportunistic trial attorneys who pursue frivolous lawsuits," said Elliott. "So far these trial attorneys have collected more than $4.6 million dollars - tax dollars that could have been used to directly improve the quality of education in Missouri."
Throughout the battle over the appointment of Supreme Court Judge Patricia Breckenridge, the Adam Smith Foundation maintained that trial attorneys have gained extraordinary influence over Missouri's judiciary. Despite this influence, the Foundation still believes the case should be resolved impartially and in favor of taxpayers by rejecting any hearing of this appeal. According to Elliott, "The Missouri Constitution is clear. Missourians know it, and these judges know it."
